2016 Tensley Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah
Santa Barbera County, California
As we transition into cooler days and less sunlight, it’s that time of year when we start to focus more on red wines, rather than crisp and light whites. With the cold temperatures that have blasted into Alberta, a big juicy Syrah is a perfect wine to complement hearty foods or a cozy and relaxing night inside.
At 20 years old, Tensley has grown to producing over 5,000 cases a year from their humble beginnings of a mere 100 cases, all from Santa Barbara County, California. Focusing on Rhone varietals, and Syrah in particular, Tensley made a name for themselves early on and were recognized as producing world class Syrah after only a couple vintages. Their vineyards, located in the rugged terrain of the Santa Ynez mountains, forces the vines to struggle and grow deep to produce richly concentrated fruit.
The Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah opens with big juicy aromas of blueberries, cherry nibs, blackberry jam, dark chocolate and eucalyptus. On the palate, it is rich and powerful with lots of smooth tannin and acidity in harmony with the ripe fruit flavours. Hints of charred smoked meat, black pepper, and cough syrup round out the profile and the long and lingering finish will leave you wanting more!
This wine will pair perfectly with barbequed and roasted red meats and hearty root vegetables, or your favourite charcuterie board. It can be enjoyed now or will cellar nicely and evolve further over the next 10+ years.
