Dani's Staff Pick for Summer 2019
June 21st
2017 Soliera Lambrusco Di Sorbara DOC
Emilia-Romagna, Italy
I instantly fell in love with this wine the first time I tasted it. I knew it would become my summer staple and I can’t wait for you to try it!
Slightly sparkling dry red wine that’s delicate and vibrant cherry pink in colour, with a fresh, bright and floral nose of strawberry, redcurrant and violet. Sour cherry, raspberries and blackberries are balanced by juicy acidity, leading to a clean, dry, delicate finish. I personally love to drink it on its own (maybe even with a straw) but it would pair perfectly with charcuterie, sushi, sea food, turkey and even cherry pie!
There are more than 60 Lambrusco varieties have been identified so far. Lambrusco di Sorbara was awarded its DOC classification in 1970. This grape’s most distinctive feature is its flowering anomaly, where the vine drops its flowers, reducing yields (in some years more than 30%). This results in the grapes having more concentrated flavours. This Lambrusco is produced by the Charmat method - with secondary fermentation in tank.
“Soliera”, from which the winery takes its name, comes from the Latin solarium, namely “place exposed to the sun”. This is a fundamental element for cultivating a particular grape like Lambrusco effectively and gives the wine a pleasant and distinctive flavour.
