2019 Zarate Fento Bico Da Ran Albariño
Rías Baixas, Spain
Fento Wines is a family-run winery that started in 2012. It’s located in Galicia of north west Spain in D.O. Rías Baixas. They advocate for varieties that are indigenous to Rías Baixas, and have a huge respect for tradition and the environment. This wine is made from 10-15-year-old Albariño vines. It’s organically farmed, harvested by hand with natural yeast fermentation in stainless steel after a brief cold soak, followed by 6 months aging in the tank before filtration and bottling.
The Fento vineyard doesn’t look like your typical vineyard. They use an ancient method of cultivating grapevines called Pergola. The Pergola system consists of a series of vertical poles supporting an overhead trellis system. The vine branches attach to the trellis wires and form a beautiful canopy.
Albariño goes hand in hand with Rías Baixas. The vineyard is greatly impacted by the Atlantic Ocean because of the cooling sea breeze. I love this wine because of the ocean influence which gives subtle salinity, creaminess, citrus, stone fruit and a smooth finish. It’s tough to compare this wine to anything else but if you usually grab a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, this wine is a great alternative! Try pairing with fish tacos, seafood risotto, oysters, mussels, Caesar salad, gouda or a salty feta cheese.
