2015 Bill Downie Petit Verdot
Yarra Valley, Australia
William Downie is widely considered one of Australia’s leading wine makers, in fact De Bortoli’s Steve Webber once described him as the “best winemaker in Australia”. After several years living and working in Burgundy, William Downie established his own label in 2003, with the intention of producing Pinot Noir of purity and detail that reflect their place of origin. Since then he has also started experimenting with a few other varietals, including Petit Verdot.
Grown from a 15-year-old biodynamically farmed vineyard in the cool climate Yarra Valley, the Petit Verdot is fermented with native yeast and aged in stainless steel for 8 months. The wine is deep in colour, with rich dark berry, ink and violets on the nose. On the palette it’s ripe and fleshy with rustic tannins, but bright, juicy and is totally fresh! An intense and deep wine from an intense and deep mind. Perfect for sipping curled up in a blanket next to the fire, or pair with roasted root vegetables or a rustic meat dish like lamb or game.
